Weekly Witness (week starting 06/12/2020)

There has been many news that took over social media and news outlets in the past week. Here are some of the hot topics to fill you in on all the updates.

Sports

Argentina’s football player, Diego Maradona, died on November 25th, at the age of 60. Thousands of fans took to the streets to mourn his death in Bueno Aires, Naples, Kolkata and many more as he had fans all over the world. A picture of his coffin circulated the news, where it was covered with the Argentine flag and the famous No.10 jersey. Many celebrities used social media to share some memories they have with him; Andy Murray, a British tennis player, posted on Instagram “He was diminutive in size but clearly a larger than life character/personality with a tonne of charisma.”

On a more positive note, Egyptian International and Liverpool Star, Mohamed Salah, has been nominated for FIFA’s Best Man Player award for 2020. Once again,he made history as the first Egyptian footballer to be nominated. This award was delayed from March due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak. Nominating the winner this year will be rather tough because of the other highly talented nominees, including Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar, to choose from. Luckily, you also have the power to determine who wins; fans can vote for their top three players with fans representing 25% of the vote. The other 75% is covered by coaches, team managers and media personnel.

Music

The American Music Awards started on November 23rd with Justin Bieber kicking it off with an emotional performance of his new song ‘Lonely’. Later on stage, Shawn Mendes joined him singing their new duet ‘Monster’. Lewis Capaldi, Dua Lipa and fan-favourite Billie Eilish all took the stage to perform their new songs. The talk of the night was The Weekend’s bandaged look. Many resources said that he is raising awareness about drunk driving and car accidents caused by it.

Social

The Egyptian National Council for Women launched a 16-day campaign to fight violence against women. The campaign is launched annually during the time frame between November 25 to December 10. The campaign coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which annually falls on November 25. This year’s campaign is special as it follows social unrest and several criminal incidents involving women such as ‘The Maadi Girl’; 24-year-old Maryam died after an attempted robbery in Maadi, and her killers were given death penalties on November 26th.

Health

As the world is celebrating Thanksgiving, we are already starting to see the consequences. Flights have increased dramatically due to the holiday season and many precautionary measures have slipped, especially in America. Health experts are warning that if we do not stay at home, there will be a new unstoppable wave of COVID-19 all over the world. Even though holidays are a time for family and friends, please do not forget to wear a mask, use hand sanitizers and avoid physical contact as much as permissible.
