CES Talent Show (Talent Show tips for achieving 1st place)

Preparation and time management are vital! It's truly never too early to begin planning. Rehearsal is the secret to putting together a terrific act that will help you nail the audition and break the heels off the crowd on a big night. The most vital tip here is to choose an activity that you're passionate about to give out your best presence on stage.

If you already take dancing, music, or singing lessons (or any other unique talent; such as fast reading, singing with your mouth closed, et cetera). and you're already a pro at it (and already have a piece to perform). Then you've got a talent show act ready to show off!

Set a specific time for practicing each day. This will strengthen your muscle memory for your movements and ensure that your body is primed to rock out at the time of practice! Repeat as much as possible. If you think you've practiced plenty, try some more. Get a friend or a parent recording of any of the rehearsals. Then you should check the videos to see what's going on and what's not. Adjust the act based on the recordings, and record and watch again to make sure the modifications are real improvements.

You're going to thank yourself later and remove a lot of stress from practicing a lot. For the costume, you NEED to get imaginative. Try out something way better than nothing. Shop at department shops or stores, or dig in your closets and wear old clothing that you never wear. Use mascara, paper, wool, fabric remnants, old tablecloths – anything you can think of to give yourself the look that your act deserves. It doesn't have to look flawless. Give your costume a meaning that resonates with your act, no need to focus on the details.

Some extra tips.

  1. Always smile

  2. Keep your eyes focused straight ahead at the audience, or if you aren't comfortable with that, look above your audience’s head – it gives the illusion of interacting with your audience while staying focused!

  3. KEEP GOING no matter what mistake happens, just keep going!

  4. Create a unique professional ending

And lastly, get ready for the inevitable. Make up a small package of such items as a needle and thread, a safety pin, an extra copy of your music, a spare pair of guitar strings, any Ibuprofen or Panadol, a hairbrush and hairspray, makeup, throat gargle, bandaids, or whatever you thought you may like in case of an emergency. Knowing that you're prepared will make you relax and have fun. Maybe you won't need them, however maybe some other performer will thank you a lot for them.
