The movie Enola Holmes was quite the astonishment when it dropped on September 23, 2020. Based on a series of books written by the author, Nancy Springer, about Sherlock Holmes’ teenage sister. It is a coming-of-age movie” revolving around Enola who seeks to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.
The movie opens with a scene between the titular character and her mother, Eudoria, who is shown to be a spontaneous mother. She teaches Enola everything she knows from a young age, continuously improving her skills and nurturing her following her father’s death when she was young. Throughout the movie, Enola breaks the fourth wall to inform the audience about what is happening, giving a more interactive experience making this movie even more immersive and appealing. Enola always described her mother as a woman who harbors secrets and values privacy. On her 16th birthday she wakes up to find her mother gone after a series of puzzles, Enola finds a small fortune which she uses to travel to her brother, Sherlock. Disguising herself as a young boy, she decides to take a train to London. On her way there she is welcomed by Viscount Tewksbury who seemed to be running away from an abusive family with a man allegedly trying to kill him. During the movie Enola has proven herself to be almost or equal to her older brother sherlock. As they approach London, she helps Tewksbury escape the grasps of his killer, which came to be a very enticing scene. As the movie comes to an end Enola gives the audience her last words “the future is up to us.” This sensational work of cinematography shows the empowerment of the younger generations, it is a message for feminism and an important showcase of how great the female mind can be and work.
As I watched the movie I was in awe of her capabilities and quick thinking, it was a very enjoyable experience with its outstanding music and astonishing cinematography. The actress Millie Bobby Brown was great in this role, delivering a beautiful story that is hopefully going to last. With this in mind, there Is hope that in the future great works such as this will continue to expand our opinions on what can and cannot be done.
